George Edward Preston IV
Introduce yourself:
Hey, my name is George Edward Preston IV and I am from Mobile, Alabama. I am a Senior Theatre Arts major with an Emphasis in Acting. I plan on attending graduate school to obtain my MFA in acting on the east coast. I plan to be on Broadway and work in the television and film industry. I also plan on starting my own acting company while working in the community to keep teens and young kids engaged with the arts and culture.
How do you define success?
I define success as having a purpose and using every day walking in your calling.
What are your goals/dreams and where do you see yourself in 5 years?
I see myself performing in New York while teaching part-time with a local arts program.
What motivates you?
What motivates me is my intended goal each day. I write down everything and my vision board is what pushes me each day. When my motivation fails my discipline fuels me. The core of my motivation is that I can work my way into bringing someone from a small town in a situation to tell them what to do better than me. I can't wait to bring others into the light.
What is something that you do (a habit or daily practice) that you believe helps you achieve your goals or be productive?
I keep a vision board and write down everything that I want specifically. I make sure to work on my craft every day even if it is something as small as reading a small scene. I stay curious each day and work on my mental health as much as my physical health. I do this by reading affirmations each day to bring good energy into my day or week.
What are 3 tips you would give to someone who is trying to reach his or her goals?
Tip number one would be to work in silence rather than oversharing your goals and plans on social media. Number two: Sacrifices are mandatory in your pursuit of success so be prepared for that. Number three would be Do not be afraid to let your light shine in front of others. Do not dumb yourself down in fear of others being threatened by you and your gift you have to share to the world. Be proud and walk proud in who you are.
Who is your inspiration and why?
My inspiration is my mother. My mother is the reason I get up and I don't complain. She exemplifies excellence and does what she has to do. I've always admired her relentless attitude towards life's challenges and obstacles.
Life motto or favorite quote?
Those who can DO- Denzel Washington
Anything else you want to share? Perhaps a project you’re currently working on or something valuable that you learned from an experience?
Currently, I will be performing a live free show on zoom called Polar Bears, Black Boys and Prairie fringed Orchids that will be live streaming October 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at 7:30PST. If you search arts.pepperdine, edu you can register for a link to view the show. The story centers around a liberal white couple hosting a cocktail party at a renovated Harlem Brownstone. The guests include a Black Lives Matter activist, his white partner, a Harlem native named Shemeka, and the mother of a slain 12 year old black boy. At the precarious party devolves into a tempest of assumptions and accusations, topics rage from underweight polar bears, saving the planet, and gentrification, to racial identity and protecting the lives of black boys.
